It was fitting that the Manangs agreeing to help were Devlin, Hanan, and Rance. It made sense. My father’s henchmen; back in full force. Their faces had more lines than I recalled and the once expressionless quality to them was gone. It seemed the emotionless race of Manangs was no more. That shell of indifference had been cracked when the immortal part began to leave them.

They looked harder, grim, and ready for vengeance. They were perfect for what needed to be done.

“Do they actually have a plan?” I asked, turning to look at Luke.

We were in the forest near Eli’s home. It was nighttime. All the sounds that should have gone along with the outdoors were missing, as though even nature knew to stay away. Or hide. I could see stars and the moon glowing between the tall, bountiful trees. It was a warm picturesque night and I was glad it was so. I couldn’t have pictured a more flawless atmosphere to say my final farewell in.

“I’m thinking they were waiting for inspiration to strike. It didn’t happen.”

“Where are the Charmed?”

“None will go against Taryn’s wishes. They’ve seen her in action. You know, the whole scary strong thing. Looks like it’s…them.” He nodded to where the Manangs stood in a row, watching us.

“Any last requests?”

I gave Luke a look. “You’re kidding.”

“Yeah.” He winced, rubbing the back of his head. “Bad joke. Sorry.”

All Remy had wanted to know was what kind of dreams I’d had in my lifetime. That was all she’d asked of me and I hadn’t granted it because if I had she would have known she’d mattered to me. I swallowed against the dryness of my throat. Remy had asked one thing of me and I’d denied it.

I hesitated, and then said, “I do have one last request, actually.”

“What is it?”

“I want you to pass something on for me, to Remy. Tell her…tell her I wanted to be human. She’ll know what you mean.”

Luke grimaced and nodded. “Creed…there’s something I feel I should tell you.”

Devlin appeared by Luke’s shoulder, grabbed him, and Shifted.

I frowned, but didn’t have time to do anything else before I was flanked by Hanan and Rance. I didn’t look at them, didn’t acknowledge them in any way. I stared in the direction of Eli’s house, imagining I saw it alight and welcoming in the blackness of night. The urge to return to it was strong.

Remy was in there, probably peacefully sleeping, unaware of what was about to happen. I didn’t want to leave her. I didn’t want her to have to be hurt by what was about to happen. I swallowed thickly, turning away from my hint of happiness.

“Let’s get this over with.” Each arm of mine was roughly grabbed and I was Shifted.

I shivered as I looked at the almost completely black sky, a blanket of death hovering over the world. It was cold, colder than I’d ever imagined it could be, so cold my breath left me in frosty bits of air.

The wind was fierce and unrelenting, tossing my hair up and around and into my eyes.
